Profile

Luke was born in Cornwall but raised in Wales and represented Wales at Under-19 and Under-21 Levels, coming up through the Newport RFC Youth system. The second-longest serving player to have been part of the original Dragons setup in 2003 (outlasted by hooker Steve Jones), Luke lined up 142 times for the Dragons in his career.

Right from the formative years for the region, even as one of the younger members of the squad, Luke was regularly part of the matchday squad although during the 2003/2004 season all his appearances were coming off the bench. He did however score his first senior try for the Dragons in the end of season rout of the Border Reivers at Rodney Parade.

The 2004/2005 season started slowly for Luke, he played a couple of games for Newport RFC in the Premiership and came on as a replacement for the Dragons against Edinburgh at the end of October. Despite this he was selected for Wales for the November International series and gained his first cap against South Africa at the Millennium Stadium on 6th November 2004. He also played against Romania the following week. It wasn’t until the Christmas win over the Cardiff Blues at Rodney Parade when Charteris made his first Dragons start. This prompted a run in the side over the New Year period and re-established Luke in the Dragons set-up for the remainder of the season. He once again gained Wales recognition and toured North America with the squad, appearing in the matches against the USA and Canada.

The 2005/2006 season saw him suffer with injury but also play a significant role in a developing Dragons team. He was once again involved in the Autumn Internationals, playing against New Zealand and Fiji and gained experience in the Heineken Cup against Castres, Sale and Munster. Unfortunately he also played in the end of season Heineken Cup 24th place play-off loss at home against Parma which consigned the Dragons to the European Challenge Cup for the 2006/2007 season.

Luke did however get selected by Wales for the end of season tour of Argentina. He didn’t play in either of the 2 Test losses in Argentina having injured his knee. The knee injury flared up again in pre-season training with the Dragons and ruled him out of the first few games of the 2006/2007 season. He came back strongly and enjoyed a good season with the Dragons, making 23 appearances including starting their European Challenge Cup Semi-Final away at ASM Clermont Auvergne. Luke scored one try in the season coming in the final game of the season. It did prove to be very crucial in the 22-15 Heineken Cup 24th place play-off victory against Rugby Calvisano, ensuring the Dragons a place in Europe's top-flight competition for the 2007/2008 season.

Luke made a strong start to 2007/2008, starting regularly through the first half of the season. Luke was recalled to the Welsh squad by caretaker coach Nigel Davies and earned an additional cap coming on as a replacement against then World Champions South Africa in a one off post-World Cup International.

Mid way through the season, Charteris collected his 50th cap for the region. He enjoyed a consistently good season with the Dragons where he impressed in the boiler house of the second row. He remained a good lineout weapon for his region and Wales and began to be recognised as having the potential to be one of rugby's top lineout forwards.

Luke played a leading role in the 2008/2009 season. Being one of the more senior players in a very young squad he started all 20 of the games he appeared in and also became a more permanent fixture in the Wales squad. He started in Wales’ Autumn International against Canada and came on as a replacement in the loss to New Zealand. In December 2008, Luke signed a three year extended contract which would see him at the Dragons until the end of the 2011/2012 season.

Luke was also involved in the 6 Nations for the first time, coming off the bench against Scotland, France and Ireland and starting in Wales’ victory in Rome against Italy. With the Dragons once again involved in the Heineken Cup 24th place play-off, Luke was withdrawn from the Wales squad to tour North America so he could play for the Dragons. He was called up to the squad as an injury replacement and came off the bench to play against the USA.

Luke earned his 100th Dragons appearance in the opening match of the 2009/10 season. Charteris also stepped up to captain the Dragons several times during the season in the absence of club captain Tom Willis. His appearances for the Dragons were limited slightly by his success on the International stage. Luke began to establish himself as a regular in the Wales squad and started all four of Wales’ Autumn Internationals against New Zealand, Samoa, Argentina and Australia. On his return to the Dragons after the fourth test against Australia, Luke was offered a week’s rest but he was keen to get back on the pitch for the region and captained the side in their resounding victory over Heineken Cup Champions Leinster. It was a successful season for the Dragons who managed to finish the league season as the 3rd placed Welsh region ahead of the Scarlets and qualify automatically for the Heineken Cup for the following season.

2010/2011 was initially a less successful season for Luke, missing out on selection in the Autumn Internationals and 6 Nations. Wales’ loss was the Dragon’s gain as he appeared 24 times over the season, starting on 21 occasions. His performances for the Dragons did earn Luke a call-up for the Wales squad for the end of season capped International against the Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium and he was subsequently named in the 45 man training squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Luke came off the bench in the first World Cup warm-up game against England at Twickenham and then started in the return match a week later at the Millennium Stadium.

Luke was named Dragons captain for the 2011/2012 season, however his selection in the 30 man Wales squad to travel to New Zealand for RWC11 meant that he would have to wait until the World Cup was over before assuming that role. Luke had a massive impact for Wales at the tournament, earning recognition from pundits and fans from around the globe as Wales finished in 4th place. He appeared in all of Wales’ games during the tournament, starting in all but the Namibia match. Particularly of note was his impressive 16 tackles in the first half of the Quarter Final against Ireland before being forced off injured.

Charteris sustained a wrist injury in Wales’ opening match of the tournament against South Africa, continuing to play on throughout the tournament. On his return to the Dragons the injury was assessed and he was out of action for a considerable period of time.

Luke made his return to action against Munster at the beginning of March and was immediately called up into the Wales squad for the final games of the 2012 Grand Slam winning Wales side.

On returning to the Dragons Luke suffered another injurty blow but at the third time of asking made his 100th PRO12 appearance in his final game for the region against Leinster at Rodney Parade before departing to Perpignan for the 2012/2013 seaosn.
