Profile

Tonderai Chavhanga joined the Dragons in October 2011 from South African provincial side Golden Lions.

The Springbok wing was born in Zimbabwe and is known for his pace and prolific scoring ability. He currently holds the South African record for the number of tries scored in one game after crossing the line 6 times against Uruguay on his international debut back in 2005.

There's definitely a sporting gene in Tondi’s family with his mother and uncles involved in athletics. His uncle Franco Kawaza was involved in strong man competitions and was the gladiator Warrior in the South African version of the popular TV show.

Tondi started his rugby career playing school-boy rugby in Zimbabwe before getting picked up by scouts in South Africa to sign for the Cheetahs. From the Cheetahs he got picked for the Springboks Sevens then the South Africa Under-21s.

In 2004 Tondi joined the Western Province side in the Currie Cup and the Stormers in Super Rugby, playing there for about 7 seasons before moving to the Golden Lions in 2010.

During his time at Western Province Stormers Chavhanga played against the Dragons in the Emirates Duel in the Desert in Dubai in 2005. The Stormers won on that day 47-17 having been 17-7 down after 30 minutes with Tondi scoring 2 tries.

Chavhanga made the Tri Nations squad in 2007 and earned his second South Africa cap against New Zealand, coming off the bench for the match in Christchurch.

Tondi played in both tests against Wales when they toured South Africa in the summer of 2008, the third and fourth caps of his 4 cap Springbok career.

He also started for Western Province against the British & Irish Lions in 2009, pushing the Lions all the way and narrowly losing 23-26 at Newlands.

Chavhanga came to the Dragons having missed out on selection for the Springboks squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup but made an immediate impression for the Welsh region. Thought by many to be the fastest man in world rugby, Chavhanga brought a fantastic turn of pace with his try against Bath in just his second match for the region.
