Coaching

Find out more about coach development opportunities in the Dragons region.

Within the Dragons region, the emphasis on coaching is focussed on DEVELOPMENT and not just education. We believe that it is our responsibility to provide coaches with opportunities to better themselves no matter what their background and previous coaching and playing experience. We have a number schemes and initiatives that deliver our coach development programme.

 WRU Coaches Locker
The Coaching Locker is available free of charge to anyone who needs to coach young players in the basic skills of the game. Video clips featuring young players practising drills are on line for coaches to see exactly how their routines will be performed in training. The films are complimented by easy-to-read diagrams which explain what coaches should aim to achieve in session after session.

The information has been put together by a panel of WRU Rugby Department experts calling on top level coaches to draw up the fine detail of the activities. The coaching aids are aimed at children from six to 16 and the WRU will expand the site to include senior coaching aids later. The activities aim to teach young players the basic skills of running, catching, passing and continuity.

The Coaching Locker uses young players in the video clips in order to show exactly how the drills will be performed for real in sessions.

Coaches can then see what their activities and sessions should look like when they run their own young teams through the programmes.

 UKCC/WRU Coach Education
The three Home Unions (England, Scotland and Wales) work together to provide opportunities for coaches to provide formal qualifications for aspiring coaches. Through the qualifications, coaches will be taught the 'how' and 'what' to coach skills necessary to develop players.

There are a number of qualifications on offer:

  • WRU Community Tag Leaders Award (CLTA)
  • IRB Rugby Ready (IRR)
  • UKCC Coaching in Rugby Union Level 1 (L1)
  • UKCC Coaching in Rugby Union Level 2 (L2)
  • UKCC Coaching in Rugby Union Level 3 (L3)
Coaches wishing to find out more information about any of the above courses, or to book on should go to www.wrucoaching.co.uk

 Dragons Coaching Association
The Dragons Coaching Association is designed to complement the UKCC Coach Education programme, assisting coaches in the progression between each coaching level. Attending these events provides coaches with the additional technical and tactical knowledge required to become better at their craft.

Throughout the year we aim to deliver a range of topics that are tailored to various coaching abilities and levels in order to ensure that coaches that attend the event gain the maximum possible benefit to help them with their current coaching level.

The coaching association events are delivered primarily at locations across the region, and are free for all coaches to attend. The events consists of both on field and off field delivery and there is always a Question and Answer session at the end of the module; providing coaches with a chance to gain further understanding of the topic. Please contact Nigel Way to find out the next coaching association date.

 Player Development Coaching

Our Player Development Coaching Programme is integral to the development of future regional and international rugby players. Therefore, we have realised the importance of developing our coaches to ensure our players are provided with the best possible service.

Our Player Development Coaches and Managers work with talented athletes aged 10 to 16 from across the region within our three established player pathways. These coaches act as ambassadors for the Welsh Rugby Union and player development in the Dragons Region.

As a Player Development Coach, you will receive an enhanced development programme with access to training techniques and methods direct from the Dragons set up. Within this set up, a select number of coaches are
identified for the Ready for Age Grade Coaching Programme. Coaches within this programme will receive a personalised development programme in order to 'fast-track' their progress to regional age grade rugby.

Coaches that are involved in the Player Development Coaching programme will receive the following benefits:

  • Free Dragons Player Development Kit
  • Bespoke Development Sessions
  • 1:1 sessions with development staff to enhance learning and development
  • Access to regional age grade training
  • Access to senior Dragons training*
  • Personalised development programme*
