Welsh Warriors Battle it out in the Home of Welsh Rugby.
The night before the hallowed turf was ripped up and taken away the home of Welsh Rugby was treated to one last flurry of passion and excitement as the two top teams in army rugby battled it out.
On Friday 23rd September, the Millennium Stadium played host to 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh as they took on 1st Battalion Welsh Guards in a friendly match, which showcased some of the superb talent our Welsh forces have on the rugby field.2 Royal Welsh came down the famous tunnel with all the spirit of the dragon and quickly took the lead with some excellent handling skills and swift running, scoring two tries in quick succession. A third well worked try before half time saw the Welsh Warriors run in comfortable leaders at half time. The Welsh Guards fought hard and dug deep, despite the ferocious Royal Welsh tackling, replying late in the 2nd half with two tries to make the final score 19 -12 to 2 Royal Welsh.
Both sides proved worthy of stepping into one of the best sporting arenas in the world and all players relished the sense of occasion and honour. It seems a fitting reward to those who show bravery off the field as they fight a different kind of battle on foreign soil, with very different dangers. Over 1,300 faithful followers cheered on our heroes and donations on the gate for an armed forces charity look to top £4000, with one man happily handing over £60 saying ‘that’s the price I would pay to see an international and I see this as nothing less’.2 Royal Welsh hope to make this an annual event inviting the top army teams to take on the Welsh Warriors, and prove that the welsh rugby spirit is very much alive and kicking in Army rugby.
All in all the evening proved a fitting tribute to our welsh soldiers, heroes on and off the field.
